THE MOUNTAINS OF CULTURE AS PART OF THE KOSMOS WORLD SYSTEM

The 7 Mountains of Culture—Family, Religion, Education, Government, Media, Arts & Entertainment, and Business—represent the major spheres that shape society. Scripture calls this world system the “kosmos” (Greek: κόσμος), which describes an ordered, structured system often in opposition to God (1 John 2:15–17). Satan is referred to as “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4), meaning he has temporary influence over the systems of thought, values, and priorities that rule society.

Jesus acknowledged this in John 14:30 when He said, "the ruler of this world is coming, but he has no power over me.” The enemy seeks to control culture through the top of these mountains, installing leaders, ideologies, and influences that flow downward to shape nations. As a result, the mountains of culture are often tools of the kosmos, forming a world system designed to keep humanity under deception, fear, and sin.

HOW STREAMS OF THOUGHT (IDEOLOGY) ARE FORMED AT THE TOP OF EACH MOUNTAIN

At the peak of each cultural mountain, decisions are made that influence the direction of society. Those in top leadership—political leaders, media moguls, university professors, entertainment icons, business magnates—create streams of thought that flow from their ideology. These streams often contain:

+ Philosophies (Colossians 2:8)

+ Worldviews (Romans 12.2 - atheism, humanism, materialism, relativism)

+ Cultural Narratives (stories and messaging that define what is “normal” or “acceptable”)

For example, in the Education Mountain, the top professors and textbook authors influence what students believe about morality, science, and God. In the Media Mountain, executives decide which news and entertainment will shape public opinion. These ideological streams begin small but gain strength as they descend.

STREAMS OF THOUGHT CONVERGE TO FORM THE RIVER OF CULTURE

As the streams of thought descend from each mountain, they merge together into a powerful River of Culture that moves through society. This river reflects the collective ideologies of the mountains, forming a current that defines the environment in which people live, work, and think.

+ Governmental ideologies determine laws and policies

+ Media narratives shape perception and normalize behavior

+ Educational content influences morality and identity

+ Entertainment and Art fuel desire and imitation

Psalm 1:1–3 contrasts the blessed man with the world’s flow, describing the wicked as chaff blown along by cultural winds. Believers must recognize that the River of Culture is constantly moving, carrying people downstream toward values that oppose the Kingdom of God.

THE RIVER OF CULTURE AS THE IDEOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT WE LIVE IN

The River of Culture is the ideological atmosphere of society—the unspoken assumptions, moral frameworks, and worldviews that surround us. Romans 12:2 commands us, Do not be conformed to this world (kosmos), but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

We live in this river daily. It flows through:

+ News and media we consume

+ Policies and politics that affect our lives

+ Educational standards shaping our children

+ Entertainment that fills our leisure time

If believers are not vigilant, they are swept into the current. It takes spiritual awareness and intentional discipleship to recognize the subtle influence of this river and resist its pull.

RIVERS ALWAYS DUMP INTO LARGER BODIES OF WATER

In nature, rivers flow into lakes, seas, and oceans, gathering momentum and mass as they travel. This is a spiritual picture of how the River of Culture, when unchecked by Kingdom influence, will ultimately lead humanity toward destruction. Revelation 17–18 portrays a global system of sin (Babylon) whose culture spreads like polluted water across the earth, influencing nations and kings.

This convergence of the world’s ideologies forms a collective rebellion against God. Like a river feeding into the ocean, culture eventually becomes part of a global system awaiting judgment.

THE RIVER OF CULTURE ULTIMATELY DUMPS INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE

Revelation 20:14–15 declares that death, Hades, and all who reject God’s Kingdom are cast into the Lake of Fire. The River of Culture, driven by the kosmos system, carries humanity toward this eternal separation from God. Every mountain that is dominated by Satanic ideology ultimately contributes to this river, which empties into the Lake of Fire as the final destination of unredeemed culture.

This sobering truth reminds believers that passivity is not an option. If we allow culture to drift without Kingdom influence, it will always flow toward judgment.

BELIEVERS ARE CALLED TO SWIM AGAINST THE CURRENT LIKE SALMON

Jesus said in Matthew 7:13–14 that the broad road leads to destruction, but the narrow way leads to life. Swimming against the current is the call of every believer. Like salmon that return upstream to birth the next generation, believers must move counter-culturally to bring Kingdom life, truth, and transformation.

Swimming upstream requires:

+ Spiritual discernment (1 John 4:1)

+ Courage to stand for truth (Ephesians 6:10–18)

+ Commitment to generational impact (Deuteronomy 6:6–7)

By going against the flow, we position ourselves to birth revival and discipleship that can shift the direction of the river for future generations.

BELIEVERS ARE CALLED TO INFLUENCE THE MOUNTAINS OF CULTURE

(2 Corinthians 10:3–5)

God does not call His people to hide from the mountains but to invade and influence them. 2 Corinthians 10:3–5 teaches that our warfare is spiritual and aimed at tearing down strongholds and false arguments. Strongholds are entrenched ideas—streams of thought—that dominate cultural mountains.

Believers influence culture by:

1. Occupying positions of influence (Daniel in Babylon)

2. Releasing Kingdom wisdom and solutions (Joseph in Egypt)

3. Exposing and dismantling lies with truth (Paul in Athens)

When the Ekklesia rises to the top of the mountains with Kingdom authority, streams of life begin to flow, purifying the River of Culture and redirecting nations toward God’s glory (Habakkuk 2:14).
